Amboyna Burl Utility Knife

Posted on May 15, 2007December 10, 2019
Just off the bench. The amboyna burl was stabilized by WSSI. You can see some bark inclusions I intentionally worked into the handle to give it some extra interest.

The steel is approximately .185” thick and is CPM154. The blade length is approximately 4 3/4” tip to bolster and 9” overall. I did the heat and cryo treatment. It sports an 8” hollow grind and is mirror polished all the way. The bolster has sculpted finger relief on both sides and is concave on the rear side.

I Had two sheaths made for this knife by master leather craftsman Sandy Morrissey.
I deliberately worked the bark inclusion into the front handle to give it some additional character. This Amboyna is great looking burl wood.
The finger relief sculpted into the bolsters is almost impossible for me to photograph but I got close on this picture. That dark spot on the bolster is the camera lens reflecting in the mirror polish.

Update:

Just got this image from Coop. I had him shoot this knife at the Blade show.
He does amazing work.

11/5/07 Just got in the new November 07 issue of Blade magazine and I was flipping through it and came across this.
I had Jim Cooper (www.sharpbycoop.com) take a picture of this one at the blade show. The full picture he took is just above here.

Kind of a nice surprise… Good job Jim, thanks.
